Re: Gary Lewis & the Playboys vs. Gerry & the Pacemakers!

On my LP shelf, I have six--count 'em, SIX--Gary Lewis and the Playboys albums.

When I was first getting interested in music, around 1965, my parents determined that Gary Lewis was "safe" for my seven year old ears. Later, Nancy Sinatra and the Monkees joined that short list.

But by the time of my 12th birthday in 1970, I wanted more--I got the Beatles HEY JUDE album.

I hadn't completely abandoned bubblegum, as my Christmas present from Santa (or my mom--I know my dad had nothing to do with it!) was THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY ALBUM.

In 1971, Mom came through with Led Zeppelin IV...

Back to the question--I give it to Gary Lewis and the Wrecking Crew.

Hmmmmm. Gerry Lewis & The Playboys? Does that and the fact that you didn't vote imply that you like both bands equally?

Gary Lewis & The Playboys pretty easily for me.

Exclamation Re: Gary Lewis & the Playboys vs. Gerry & the Pacemakers!

Ranking my favourite songs by these two bands is tough. It's something like this:

This Diamond Ring - Playboys
Ferry Cross the Mersey - Pacemakers
Walk Hand in Hand - Pacemakers
Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying - Pacemakers
You'll Never Walk Alone - Pacemakers
Green Grass - Playboys
Count Me In - Playboys
Everybody Loves a Clown - Playboys
Girl on a Swing - Pacemakers
My Heart's a Symphony - Playboys

But my favourites by Gerry & the Pacemakers are all ballads!

It's Gary Lewis & the Playboys who are the better rockers. So it's really difficult to choose, but I suppose I have to go with the Pacemakers on the basis of my list above.

Re: Gary Lewis & the Playboys vs. Gerry & the Pacemakers!

Closer than I think it should be, given that some of the Wrecking Crew was playing behind Gary Lewis. But...whatever.
