Who's Your Favorite Byrd?

From their collective work with the Byrds, Solo and other bands, who is your favorite Byrd?

Re: Who's Your Favorite Byrd?

The "hip" choice would be Gram Parsons, but McGuinn is my favorite.

Re: Who's Your Favorite Byrd?

Hmm... Interesting question. My favorite member of the Byrds within the confines of that actualy band is definitely Roger McGuinn. He totally personifies that band for me and is the one constant throughout the history of the Byrds.

That being said, my overall favorite member is Gram Parsons, but though his influence on their direction was huge, Gram was a member of the band for such a short time that it's really hard to think of him in the context of that band. The one album he made with them is an absolute classic though. When I think of Gram Parsons, I think of the Flying Burrito Brothers and his stellar solo career before I think of him as a Byrd.

So, my overall favorite is Gram, but my favorite Byrd is Roger!

Re: Who's Your Favorite Byrd?

I would have to say Mcguinn, because he was so talented cool and almost a visual icon of that time. I also listen to a lot of his solo work, but Clarence White was so immensely talented (check out is guitar work esp on the '69-72 live Byrd albums) along with the incomparable Gram Parsons and Gene Clark who put out some great solo albums afterwards.

Exclamation Re: Who's Your Favorite Byrd?

Roger McGuinn. Because of the little square glasses, he just edges out songwriter extraordinaire Gene Clark.

Re: Who's Your Favorite Byrd?

That's a tough one....probably Crosby ( then Hillman) ...they wrote many of my favorite tracks ...on my two favorite lp's by them..... Younger Than yesterday and Notorious Byrd Bros.
I also like Crosby's later stuff with CSN and his 1st solo lp better than the others though Hillman did some fine material on Manassas and
Clark co wrote 8 Miles High with Crosby and McGuinn and I Feel A WHole Lot Better....2 great tracks. Sadly his solo things never caught on with the public though there are some gems scattered on them like 'Polly Come Home' which Plant and Kraus covered on their lp.

Re: Who's Your Favorite Byrd?

@dr wu.... Manassas were indeed something special, Shame they only lasted a short time- but with talent like Dallas and fuzzy etc.... must have been hard working within the confines of a band.. Countryfunktion I calls this

Re: Who's Your Favorite Byrd?

The two Byrds I dislike the most are David Crosby followed by Gram Parsons.

I just think Crosby is wimpy and overrated.

And given how very little he accomplished with the Byrds, I don't understand how/why Parsons has gotten any votes here at all.

And both lacked the discipline to channel whatever musical talent they may have had into commensurate output. What they both badly needed was a good ass kicking.
