Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
Hey, should I be criticized or held accountable because my kids like good music? Recently took a little trip with my two brothers and my two kids. I told my 11 year old son he could pick the first CD. He immediately said Zombies and handed me 'Odessy and Oracle' to play. I throw it in and he and my 9 year old daughter proceed to sing the entire cd (my sons favorite is 'Butchers Tale' and the daughter likes 'Hung Up On Dream'). Anyways, my oldest brother sat there and said that I had ruined my kids. He said they'll be social outcasts because of the music they like. None of their friends will like it. Heh, maybe he's right, but isnt it worth it to not have to listen to Hannah Montana cd's on a three hour trip?
(The daughter chose 'Revolver' and my brother hates the Beatles, so I relished in that.) Just thought it was funny.

My son's favorite artists are:
Kiss AC/DC Pink Floyd Beatles (mostly just Abbey Road) Queensryche Dokken Black Sabbath Ozzy Osbourne Pat Benatar Heart Waylon Jennings Bob Seger Rolling Stones Metallica He likes current stuff too, like Linkin Park, Disturbd, Nickleback, etc. BTW, he's 13, so I've got him on a good track as far as I'm concerned. :) |

Re: Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
I skewed my son's musical interest early on toward the Zombies, to the point when he was 5-6 he called them his favorite band. (He probably liked their name from having watched Scooby Doo.)
He now likes Brit rock, the Beatles, Johnny Cash, Chuck Berry, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Seeger, Lynryd Skynyrd, and 50s rock and roll. My younger daughter likes High School Musical and Hannah Montana. They both love Alvin and the Chipmunks. |

I just can't post here on a public forum what I would've told either your brother or my sisters if they ever said that too me... if you know what I mean. But one thing I'd like to ask: does your brother want little automatons? Little mindless droids? That's what I'd ask him - for starters.

Re: Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
Ok keeping in mind who his mum is AND that he's only 8 , I realize his taste could change but I just asked him his favorite bands /musicians are....
The Beatles The Who Queen Kiss The Ramones Elvis(Presley) The Beach Boys The Rolling Stones this is fine to me ![]() He is taking drun lesson this spring...and claims that he LOVES Keith Moon and Ringo is still his favorite Beatle! Here's the thing..one of his cousins is heavy into pop music (he's male) and watches crap like 'American Idol' ... Over the Christmas vacation we were over ...a mild spat happened because my son got a mp3 player for his xmas present...cousin wanted to play Kelly Clarkson lol here's the edited version : COUSIN: Can I play a cd in your player ? SON : Sure...what Cd ? COUSIN: American Idol etc blah blah...Kelly Clarkson SON: WHAT ??!! NO! Your NOT playing that crap on my player..only GOOD music... COUSIN:That IS good music... SON:Thats wannabe's ...you gotta listen to MUSIC on my cd player ! Name calling..blah blah ![]() But my son says 'Well NOT on my player' lol Anyway I think that he has a bit of an attitude but I like that he thinks for himself...I mean I don't force him to listen to anything..I just listen to my music..teach him who they are..etc..he listens to his favorites He really loves KISS at the moment...I'm not sure how he fits in with his peers because often He mouths off to them about rap/pop/ etc...so I guess he isn't a crowd follower..thats a good thing imo ... and he HATES Journey too ![]() ![]()

Re: Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
Man, where did I go wrong? My older teens listen to hip-hop and my ten year old loves High School Musical. My 4 year old loves the White Stripes though, so there may be hope.

Re: Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
My son (13) is no where near "ruined". But he found a live version of "Kashmir" on the Comcast "On Demand" videos, and played it over and over. I told him that if he liked that, he would love the studio version. He found it, and yes, he does love it.
Mostly, 'tho, he likes to torture me, with the gutteral screamers of Alexis on Fire, Chiodos, and the like. ![]() |

Re: Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
Reminds me of elementary/high school not so long ago; I was always listening to the likes of Zeppelin, Boston, Floyd, AC/DC etc, wearing classic rock t-shirts and all that... classmates often made jokes of the fact, but I pitied them for listening to shit like Sum 41, Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback, Creed, etc.

Re: Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
My oldest daughter ( 12 ) likes Linkin Park, The Arctic Monkeys, Fair To Midland and such. Just a few days ago she really surprised me with listening to How The West Was Won cd and actually liking it!! That was cool.

Re: Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
My grandma accuses my dad of that all the time....
Oh, that's not what you meant? My dad's friends used to be pretty jealous of his kids since we all listen to all the stuff he listened to in the 60 & 70s. Then I started listening to grunge... and now I listen to death metal most of the time.

Re: Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
My daughters love Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand,Wolfmother, Nirvana, Panic, and some girl singers (I wouldn't have a clue who they are). My son has always loved heavy rock and disappears at least 2 nights a week to attend gigs. Listening to music of any kind will not spoil your kids.

Re: Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
I am only 18 years old, so I don't have any children myself, but I would like to thank my dad who turned me on to good music at an early age.
My earliest memories of Classic Rock was when I was about 6 or 7 and my favorite song was Can't You See by the Marshall Tucker Band. When I was 11, my dad had bought the Beatles 1 before we went on vacation, and that was all I listened too. From there on out, it's been Classic Rock (60's and 70's; not some of the stuff you'll here on Classic Rock radio) ever since.

Re: Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
I'm 19 and my Dad turned me on to a lot of good music, but I listen to a lot of stuff that he's not into. He's not a big fan of any of my real favorites (The Who, Springsteen, Tom Petty, Rush), but we do end up liking a lot of the same bands when it all comes down to it.
Oh and Carlozzi, that was how I got into classic rock. 12 years old, Beatles 1, long vacation. AMAZING!

Re: Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
I have 3 Kids, A Son 17, & two Daughters ages 15 & 11. My son is pretty much a music lover like myself, he listens to anything as long as it's good music, for example on his cell phone he has from AC/DC & Metallica to Lucero or David Allen Coe among others. Now my 15 year old daughter unfortunately likes all the Hippity Hop
![]() A funny story, this past summer we went on vacation and My Son & I were jamming out to Metallica "Sad But True" banging our heads cruising down the highway ![]() ![]() ![]()

Re: Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
I think i have taught my kids well
My son who is 8 loves all kinds of music Kiss, Zeppelin, Cheap Trick, Ratt, but he likes some of the newer stuff to Killers and the Donnas. Now my daughter who is 9 loves all of that to but she also has a thing for Hannah Montana and thats fine i would rather her listen to her then some of the other things that are out there. I really dont find her to be all that bad in fact im taking her this Sunday to see her(Hannah Montana) in concert. I like the fact that my kids are well rounded.

Re: Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
I think it's rather strange that your brother would say that. The Beatles and The Zombies are extremely kid-friendly, and I doubt your kids would become social outcasts for liking them.

Re: Anybody else accused of ruining their kids?
My brother's girls (who are 13 and 15) like some of the same music we grew up with but they like some of the new stuff too.I buy them Itunes cards for birthdays and Christmas so hopefully they are buying some good music.
