The Smiths were hugely popular in the U.K. in the eighties but barely made the charts in the United States.

Smith had a huge hit with their cover of Baby It's You but that was basically it. A lot of unfulfilled potential because they clearly had some talent.

I've never even heard of the first band. Wasn't "Baby It's You" originally a girl group song?

I can't say I'm a huge Smiths fan, but at least one of their albums "The Queen Is Dead" is an absolute classic, and there are other songs/singles they did that I like as well.

Indeed! Having lived there for awhile I can tell you Morrisey is basically royalty.

Yes it was. Here's the original:



It was also covered by this rather popular British Invasion band:



Smith did it the best though because of superior instrumental backing as well as Gayle McCormick's excellent vocals. In Smith's cover the instrumental backing was used in place of backing vocals.
