Here from another board are some opinions on the Electric Light Orchestra that made me snicker:

I would vote for a dead dog over ELO.

Exclamation Re: Blondie versus the Electric Light Orchestra!

Electric Light Orchestra was the very embodiment of the worst excesses of seventies prog. Thankfully Blondie arrived on the dial as a much needed antidote.

If she despised me, she kept it a secret. No matter, I can't stomach Metallica either, her 2nd favorite band!

what a load of BS. ELO were more a pop band than prog. In fact most prog circles don't consider them prog (although I do).

Why is it that instrumentation is called too much excess while wearing too much makeup and when dance moves interfere with the music its not excess show? Same with punk can those so called great punk bands stop jumping around and spitting on people so we can actually hear the music. Wait if we hear the actual music we might realize they can't even play those instruments.
So sick of the excess argument its not that these bands were playing excess its that you didn't like the music they were playing. Big deal move onto something else we all hate certain music.

Okay to hate just don't tell me its because they had too much excess after all your avatar is Yes.

I don't hate 'em. Just don't play their elevator-prog around me and no one gets hurt.

edit: Besides, Yes didn't get "excessive" until the very next studio album, "Tales From Narcoleptic Oceans." Even Wakeman, WAKEMAN!, skedaddled!

Since rock music is a form of pop music, I'd say they can be both.

The latter two are definitely excesses. You will note from the videos, however, that the members of Blondie hardly dance about at all, not even the chick singer. While the chick singer wears quite a bit of makeup, I'm willing to make allowances for women. They're like that. The other five members don't appear to wear makeup at all though.

While I agree that punk soon generated its own excesses (safety pins, spitting, anger, etc.), Blondie did not display these. They played good honest rock hearkening back to the radio airwaves of 1965-66.

Fair enough, but for whatever reason my taste in music seems to correlate to a certain extent with simplicity of presentation if not form. Granted, it's not an exact correlation but statistically there's some.

And in the case of this comparison, would you disagree that Blondie could well be lumped in with the garage bands from a decade earlier while the Electric Light Orchestra could most assuredly not?

Just because we all hate certain music doesn't mean we can't discuss and bicker about the music we dislike as well as that which we like. If we couldn't discuss our preferences here, the rationale for a discussion forum would have been obviated.
