Re: Obscure Music: Rock, Jazz, etc

I discovered these by accident years ago, then spotted three 2nd hand albums in a shop in Hull of all places, with Mel Collins handling the brass and Jess Roden on guitar and vocals... all is good.

Alan Bown - Pyramid.

The Blockheads were on the cards, but just before... Ian Dury piloted this crew, Charlie Charles died too young... tightest stickman I ever saw.

Kilburn & The High Roads - Pams Moods.

I don't know about obscure or even rare, but Belle & Sebastian have always represented a nice little retreat..

Interesting musician and he ended up In Jonesy for a few lp's...a band I like doing proggy things. Too many people never heard of these obscure but excellent bands.

Re: Obscure Music: Rock, Jazz, etc

Not had much of a chance to play anything today but I have been thinking about this band, some left to form The Rubettes (not a bad thing).... and there was involvement in a 1969 brilliant skinhead movie, titled Bronco Bullfrog (which I thoroughly recommend!)..

Howard Werth was the main stayer of this excellent band.

I originally heard this on a very late radio show, which was heavily based around the 4AD and Creation label.

Heidi Berry - Dancer.

Legs Diamond is a rock band from the late 70's. This is probably my favorite song by them.

Been skipping thru' some stuff(The Silence, Artwood Combo, Lester Square and the Gt's) and this B-side on the extinct Plexium label.

Re: Obscure Music: Rock, Jazz, etc

Even though I like the early Manfred Mann.. (and the Dylan obsession!)... their material 1968 leading up to the Earth Band is exceptionally good - Chapter Three, Vols 1&2 make for great listening. (strange to think that when Brian Jones headed to London on a train to seek fame and form a band, the guy who was a stranger to Brian was travelling in the same rail car and had the same intention... his name was Paul Pond. Six months later Paul Pond recognised Brian on stage and thus changed his name to Paul Jones and his own success began.)
Anyroad... top Brit tune here-

Manfred Mann - Mister You're A Better Man Than I.

This song, "Paris Calling" is by a pretty obscure rock band Shark Island from the 80's.

Think it was Massive Attack and his work with them that aroused interest in this chap, then, Record Collector Magazine did a limited re-issue. Watched a 1972 horror movie the other week and saw he'd done the movie score.... not everyone's cup of tea-

Wil Malone - One More Flight To Parker.

Re: Obscure Music: Rock, Jazz, etc

From an equally brilliant album, this song penned by Elvis Costello captures the futility of War-the British Navy were dashing to the Falkland Islands and yet Thatcher shut down the docks and the manufacturing of vessels!!
Not a popular song on the bbc(spit) as it was "anti"... I don't know if it's the pent up emotion of Robert's disability ( he fell from a fourth floor window whilst hosting a party for Gong.).. or his actual dispair at another war.... probably both!

Robert Wyatt - Shipbuilding.

Re: Obscure Music: Rock, Jazz, etc

.... A much overused phrase today is, "cult"... making me shy away or roll me eyes:
Like a few contributing to this thread - maybe my record buying and listening habits have eventually become profitable and dare I say trendy!?
Time is a thief, I can't believe this was put out on a jazz label in 1988...where indeed my Fairport, did the time go.
Spirit Of Eden was such a departure from their synth beginnings... yet quickly the Verve label pressed more as the jazz and off-beat keys suited nocturnal folk like me.
This song is a plea... a plea to his older Brother Ed Hollis, who worked with Eddie and the Hotrods and Robert Palmer.. Ed was using heavily and Mark sang and wrote this... with production help from Tim Friese Greene, who's grandpa pioneered moving film and cinematography (Robert Donat movie.)
Shortly after this came out Ed Hollis succumbed to his habit. We lost Mark Hollis to cancer several years ago, this album and song really do stand up to the test of time... Spirit of Eden is deffo an album to add to one's collection.

Talk Talk - I Believe In You.

Re: Obscure Music: Rock, Jazz, etc

Richard Gotteherer and Robert Gordon and Private Stock records began my investigations into Link Wray, a Korean vet who lost a lung, a Shawnee Indian told never to sing... but "to try instrumentals"... hence Rumble and so on. This 1975 offering on the Virgin label, is not that easy to find... recorded at The Manor Studios in Berkshire...virtually a pickup band supply the sound... the result was special.

Link Wray - Midnight Lover.
... I posted recently a song by Ian Dury and mentioned his drummer Charlie Charles... he sessioned on this album Stuck in Gear and subsequent live shows(watch how tight this stickman is)

Midnight Lover - live, OGWT.

Re: Obscure Music: Rock, Jazz, etc

The fact this gypsy genius melted his hand together in a caravan fire.. we all probably (or might) never have played open tuning and moved up and down the board..
78rpm's like this were in my gaff from day one, Parker, Gillespie and Bechet too.. but it's the rhythm that's the hook here:

Django Reinhardt - Minor Swing.
