Re: Bachman-Turner Overdrive vs. Grand Funk Railroad!

When I was a wee Buckeye and started going to 'cool' parties, Grand Funk was a thing. Grand Funk though hated by most critics had that certain something something. I can't say the same thing about BTO.

In the charts:
BTO had three top 10 albums in the U.S. over a three year span and four songs cracked the top 40.
GFR had seven top 10 albums in the U.S. over a five year span and nine songs cracked the top 40.

I still crank uo Grand Funk...BTO not so much!

Grand Funk (Railroad), not just one of the best '3-man' rock groups of all time but one of the 'best' rock groups, period.

GFR because of the self titled 'Red' lp.....was heavier than any other US lp at the time.

The later pop rock stuff, much of it listed above, is not their best work imho...but the first 4 or 5 rocked out.

Re: Bachman-Turner Overdrive vs. Grand Funk Railroad!

I've seen the current GFR line-up three times over the last 20 some years, it is strictly an oldies type show but it rocks more than other bands doing the same circuit. Certainly better than Foghat!

I saw Mark Farner solo as a headliner around 1980 and I don't remember a ton of highlights, I may have been partying.

GFR not being in the Hall Of Fame is on a short list of head scratchers. Artists that weren't darlings of Rolling Stone Magazine are slow to get in (Look how long it took Todd Rundgren).

Grand Funk did have a musical shift to a more radio friendly almost glam style but I think all the albums have decent moments. "Footstompin' Music" is one of my all time faves.

Exclamation Re: Bachman-Turner Overdrive vs. Grand Funk Railroad!

Bachman-Turner Overdrive! My blues-rock loving buddies and I were knocked out by their first LP which I'd bought in the late spring of 1973:
