Which band do you prefer?

So what's with this Blondie obsession ? Seems like every poll lately involves this band. Have to go with Van Halen this time.

I have to do quite a few polls for Blondie. They've got so many great videos that one isn't enough.

;)

It's funny though. I was going to ask you how you can prefer as execrable a band as Van Halen to Blondie.

I can understand you not liking Van Halen but don't you think making a statement "execrable a band as Van Halen" a bit harsh ?

I really dislike Van Halen. To me the band encapsulates the worst excesses of the eighties.

Van Halen with Roth over Blondie
Blondie over Van Hagar.

Re: Blondie versus Van Halen!

The way I see this poll it's the best punk rock band of them all versus the band that ushered in the whole era of hair metal.

And the band that gave us Rapture

Re: Blondie versus Van Halen!

While not my favourite Blondie track, Rapture didn't actively irritate me. A number of Van Halen tracks such as Jump do precisely that though. Admittedly it's partially due to Van Halen's stage antics and overall buffoonery.

Still, I can count almost ten Blondie tunes I will turn up when I hear them played on the car radio. There's only one Van Halen tune I will turn up, Jamie's Crying. The others make me punch a station switch button.

For comparison's sake here are two very singer-centric clips of the two bands:

Twould seem that there are a lot of Blondie haters on this board. That bewilders me.

I don't hate Blondie but they are a little poppy for my taste. I see them more as new wave then punk. Punk to me is The Misfits, Black Flag, Fear , The Cramps etc.
But hey, Blondies OK ...

Too many of those later (post-1978) punk bands introduced elements into punk that, depending upon one's opinion, either expanded upon the initial rationale for punk or deviated from it. For example, this safety pin and razor business was a British add-on. Anger was another add-on. There was nothing angry about the earliest punk bands on both sides of the Atlantic, e.g. Ramones, Dead Boys, Damned, etc.

And I thought Blondie stayed true to the original punk ethos, i.e. rebelling against the overproduction and other excesses that had crept into rock in the seventies and returning the music back to the three minute singles of the sixties. Blondie did that very well indeed.

Meanwhile Van Halen picked up nothing from the punk movement. Not only did Van Halen not rebel against the excesses that had crept into rock music, they embraced and built upon those excesses as did Queen but in a somewhat different way.
