Two excellent bands but I'm giving the edge to Spirit.

Question Re: Spirit versus Ten Years After!

I wonder if the added exposure Spirit has received as a result of the Stairway to Heaven lawsuit has resulted in more rock fans being exposed to their music and thus enhanced the band's present day popularity.

Good question? I'm sure it gave them some exposure but not sure it was good or bad? On a side note I don't see Ten Year After getting much credit these days. It's almost like they have been forgotten too. Besides "I'd Love to Change the World" you don't hear them on the radio not even "I'm going Home". A band like Ten years After had so many wonderful songs its a shame. Same goes for Spirit.

In regards to the vote I picked Spirit but it would be close as I like both bands. On a side note I think both Alvin Lee and Randy California are better guitar players (not talking song writing) than Jimmy Page and his lying ass.

Ironically I've always associated Alvin Lee with Randy California in my mind even though they were very different guitarists. The reason for my associating the two was that a radio DJ on CFPL Radio in London calling himself Thomas Aquinas hosting a progressive rock program matched Alvin Lee up against Randy California in a knockout poll featuring sixteen guitarists back in 1969. Randy California won that matchup. (Eric Clapton disposed of Jimi Hendrix in one semi while Mike Bloomfield triumphed over Jimmy Page in the other semi and Eric Clapton won out in the final.)

Both Alvin Lee and Randy California used to appear high up in lists of greatest guitarists through the seventies but have sadly faded into relative obscurity since that time.

nice and at least back then people understood that Page wasn't this godlike Guitarist.

did you ever see Spirit back in the late 60's or early 70's? would have loved to see them back then only saw Spirit in late 70's and in 80.

Exclamation Re: Spirit versus Ten Years After!

No, to my knowledge Spirit never played my home town of London, Ontario at the time.

The Dave Clark Five did play at London's Treasure Island Gardens on 3 November 1964. The Rolling Stones also played at Treasure Island Gardens on 26 April 1965 but standard Stones' crowd frenzy caused police to panic and they cut the power just a few songs into the show. The paying customers were therefore cheated.

Rolling Stones London Concert - CHRW Radio

Rolling Stones London Concert - London Free Press

I didn't attend either show because I was still in grade school and a bit young to be really interested.

I did have tickets for both Jethro Tull and Procol Harum who were booked to play Centennial Hall downtown in 1969 but neither show took place. Jethro Tull for whatever reason couldn't make it through customs from Detroit. The idiots managing Centennial Hall somehow opened the doors to a flood of non-ticket holding music fans so the promoter couldn't/wouldn't pay Procol Harum who accordingly declined to play. I did get to see the Nice about a year later at Centennial Hall though!

Jimmy Page did in one of the quarterfinals triumph over Jeff Beck, my current pick for the greatest guitarist of all time.

As an impressionable young fellow of eighteen I found Keith Emerson's stage antics dazzling and inspirational. I thought they reflected his single minded dedication to his musical craft.

Well he was certainly entertaining anyway.
