Metal Fans Are The Most Loyal According To Spotify

Heavy Metal fans are more loyal to their favorite bands than followers of any other genre in the world, according to research by streaming service Spotify.

Figures suggest that metal fans are over a fifth more likely to keep listening to core bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden, while fans of the next-highest genre, pop, will tend to listen to a wider range of acts.

Analysts monitored how often a listener would return to artists defined as central to a genre. They discovered that, on a global basis, metal fans stick to their favourites much more often than those who prefer pop, folk, country, rock, hip-hop, reggae, jazz, EDM, classical or blues.

Spotify say: "Metal fans are the most loyal of all. One could also conclude that the more guitar-oriented genres inspire more loyalty in the listener."

That's an interesting method. So if pop fans listen to Alanis Morissette and she's not counted as being "central to a genre," it doesn't count? Seems like they could have made it a lot simpler and a lot more accurate just to count how often they listen to ANY artist of that genre.

But if the results do hold true then that's no surprise for metal. Surprising that Classic Rock isn't first or second though, if radio is any indication then people like going back to Zep, Floyd, Beatles on an infinite loop. I wonder it the peculiar method is why classic rock didn't rank higher.

I think its more a case that there is always mass amounts of pop and other genres being released – but metal isn’t mainstream anymore so people have to reach back to when it existed in a popular form.

A very good point. I mean there's new metal coming out but how much of it would be deemed "essential to the genre" or whatever it was.

This doesn't surprise me, its a genre with very loyal fans.
I would guess jam band or Grateful Dead genre would be close to the top of the list also.
