Re: Ritchie Blackmore ‘banned’ from Hall of Fame

Seems to be a total mess really. Morse and Airey should certainly have been included, and if Blackmore isn't there it will seem a real half hearted effort.

Ian Paice seems to agree.

Quote:
But the Rock Hall have given the nod to Paice, Ritchie Blackmore, David Coverdale, Rod Evans, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Glenn Hughes and Jon Lord.

Paice tells Rolling Stone: “You'd like to think that anyone who was ever in the band and made a contribution should really be listed.

“All these people, from the very beginning to the current lineup, have helped maintain Purple as a viable touring entity. So to pick some over others, I wouldn't have done it that way.”
I'm not sure why Evans, Coverdale and Hughes are included, and Morse isn't. It should have been all.

And Gillan certainly doesn't like it.

Quote:
Gillan says in a blog: “The induction is not – in clear fact – for Deep Purple. It is an arbitrary selection of past members which excludes Steve and Don, both of whom have been with the living, breathing Deep Purple for a very long time.

“Obviously this is very silly. My response is quite simple: ‘Thank you very much.’”

He adds: “What a coincidence… this morning I got an invitation to a wedding from some dear old friends. My family was not invited and they said that I would be required to sit next to my ex. They were shocked when I called to thank them, and declined the invitation.”

If I'm reading this correctly, it's Purple's management that is balking at Blackmore's appearance, not the Hall.

Yes, but the rest of it is the Hall.

Exactly.

In a statement, the co-founder (Ritchie Blackmore) reports that the band’s long-time manager Bruce Payne has refused permission for him to take part in the ceremony in Brooklyn in April.

Re: Ritchie Blackmore ‘banned’ from Hall of Fame

WTF? Ritchie Blackmore is Deep Purple. No offense to Steve Morse, but if Blackmore isn't there, the whole thing is a farce. No, it already was a farce, now it's worse than a farce.

Re: Ritchie Blackmore ‘banned’ from Hall of Fame

Blackmore has stated MANY times he doesn't care about RaRHoF and that he would never attend any ceremony.

This RaRHoF has been a joke since it's inception and with further proof waiting 23 years to induct this legendary/influential band.
If the HoF had done it right to begin with, Ritchie Blackmore would still be Purple's guitarist, Jon Lord would be alive and MKII might have taken the stage together
to except their trophy or whatever memento is given out...oh well, that ship has sailed.

I guess he changed his mind?

Quote:
Blackmore’s statement says: “Ritchie was honoured by the offer of induction to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. He was discussing the possibility of attending, until we received correspondence from the President of the Hall Of Fame, who said that Bruce Payne, management for the current Deep Purple Touring Band, had said ‘No.’

“Therefore Ritchie will not be attending the ceremony. He sincerely thanks all the fans that voted for him for their support.”

"Discussing the possibility of attending".

I suspect he decided he wanted to go when told he wouldn't be welcome.

Did anyone really think he would have gone?

Seems as though it's not that Ritchie isn't invited, it's that the current lineup has no desire to perform with him at the ceremony.

I can understand why they feel that way.

I remember when Blondie were inducted, the same situation arose, where the present band did not want to perform with the original members who turned up.

Joe Lynn Turner on Deep Purple’s Rock Hall Induction: ‘It’s a Mess and a Shameful Situation’

The announcement that Deep Purple would finally be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has done nothing to squash the controversy linking the two together. The next issue to contend with was which members, both former and current, would be inducted and then who would show up. Noted tension exist between certain inductees and Ritchie Blackmore was informed via Deep Purple’s management that they would like for him not to attend the ceremony. Now, former Rainbow and Deep Purple singer Joe Lynn Turner has offered his thoughts from the outside.

Re: Ritchie Blackmore ‘banned’ from Hall of Fame

I think Gillan has more weight in what he says than Hughes, who was only a brief member, and for me would be way behind Morse and Airey in terms of who should be inducted.

I notice it clears up the nonsense about Blackmore, and says he wasn't banned from attending by the Purple management (who couldn't ban him anyway). They clarify by saying he wouldn't be playing, which they can say.

It would be lovely if they could all get on for the evening, but the invitation list has been made a mess of, and lifetime issues wont be resolved in those circumstances I fear.
