Sometimes I wish artists would just concentrate on making music and forget about worthless activism.

Celebrities only become activists when they want attention.

Re: Video: Neil Young Previews New Anti-Starbucks Song

Many of the great songs of the '60s would not have come to fruition if not for the spirit of activism.

You must love modern music.
No mainstream artist has called out the leadership in over a decade.
And they have had a lot of reasons to.

It's not cool to like activism now days.

Yeah, I should think for myself more often, but I've been verbally attacked in the past for supporting agendas against the establishment.

No problem Beatles fan.
I wasn't so much promoting activism as much as just having artists use a song to raise awarness of certain social issues from time to time. Every since the Dixie Chicks said they were embarassed by the president (and the mostly media and government created backlash that followed) no popular artist under forty has dared say peep about the establishment in a song.

Let's hear it for Neil Young & the old dudes. They came from an era when you grew some balls and questioned authority.

I wonder if Neil is still sweetening his coffee with Monsanto's chemical products? And why was he ever buying lattes at Starbucks anyway? I wouldn't be caught dead doing something like that. The Bill's Coffee Time trucks that ply construction sites are as upscale as I'm personally willing to go for coffee.

I've tuned him out as a tosser ever since he opted to move to California anyway. Had he chosen the Yukon instead he would have gotten my respect.

Oh please, you going to throw out the tired 'you must live in a cave to have a voice' argument? There's things we all use, like oil, fast food meat, montanso sweeteners, etc - but does that mean nobody is allows to have a voice to encourage change and call out corruption? A world where these industries take over (if they havent already) becomes an ugly place, and we need artists voices, especially ones that will be heard, like Neil's, to raise awareness and provide a check and balance to them.

Let's put it this way, I actually hate the government to death.

Why? I can't say because I'll get kicked off this site.

Not to mention it was a pretty poor example. Who says Neil uses artificial sweetener in his coffee? Real sweeteners are more common not to mention many drink it black, and knowing Neil he probably drinks tea instead.

More importantly... moving to California makes someone a tosser? That's a pretty outrageous statement.

Re: Video: Neil Young Previews New Anti-Starbucks Song

Personally love activism in music, but it's best when it's done subtly. In this case I just think the science of the anti-GMO crowd is sketchy at best. And while Monsanto does engage in some heinous business activities, they have also pioneered some real advancements in food production to feed an expotentionally growing world population. Hippy dippy "solutions" like organic and local do nothing to help feed the starving third world masses. Monsanto has actually got scientists working on those problems now, while Neil releases a self promoting video. Science is not the enemy.

Ditto

@ Foxhound:
Didn't Neil move to California in like 1970?
He tells the story of writing "Old Man" about his neighbor while living on his ranch in California.

1966 actually. And I've never forgiven him. It's such a hippy-dippy thing to do. Like an aspiring movie starlet or something Avril Lavigne would do, and did.

Because it's hypocrisy! Don't criticize someone for producing a product if you yourself buy the product, or worse yet are giving yourself a free pass for using/doing something far worse ethically.

I see people with anti-pipeline signs on their lawns. But they still have cars. They don't see the hypocrisy in driving these cars (or minivans!) to the supermarket to buy groceries. They should be walking and carrying the damn bags themselves like I do! And what the hell is this business of driving their kids the three blocks to school so that the kids are dependent and as out of shape as their parents? Then they probably buy bottled water, the worst fraud and resource waster imaginable.

Checks and balances on corporations? That's always been as easy as pie. Don't BUY their products. That very swiftly brings any of them to their knees.

When it comes to activism by professional entertainers (actors as well as musicians), my attitude has long been "Shut up and play son. I'm not paying for your opinion." I'm not interested in professional entertainers' half-baked pop culture ramblings. The learned opinions I want I get from reading books, magazines and newpapers or listening to university professors with years of expertise in the area.

You're going to blacklist the entire state of California as being hippy dippy? You do realize it's literally the most populous state in the entire US? A lot of people move to California, bro.

That's downright idiotic. No other words for it than that.

I don't agree with Neil's politics either. As someone who counts calories very strictly and also nurses a huge sweet tooth, I fuckin' love aspartame. Spread that shit on my morning bread if I could. Monstanto's fine by me. But no matter what we think of Neil's politics... that's no excuse to say incredibly stupid things. To say that you've "never forgiven Neil" for moving to California verges on clinically disturbed.
