Music Note Re: Top Pop Tunes Showcasing the Harmonica!

Evidently the Beau Brummels recorded mixes of both "Laugh Laugh" and "Just a Little" both with and without the harp. The "Laugh Laugh" mix with the harp was selected for the single that became their first hit, while the "Just a Little" mix without the harp was selected for the single that became their second big hit.

Interesting...I always thought they copped the sound from the Beatles "Love Me Do".

Those are great! I never associated the Ugly Ducklings with bluesy harp riffs. The hit singles I'd heard were straight forward guitar dominated garage rock like this one:

I included "Centerfold" as the J. Geils Band entry in my harmonica poll:

Thank you. Although they were largely an ensemble act, the harmonica was so central to their sound that just about anything one chose would have been a good choice. Personally, I would have gone with Whammer Jammer.

Also, I think Muddy Waters' version of Mannish Boy (I'm a Man) is the definitive one (cf. its use in "Risky Business" when all the girls enter the house).

Since Hohner's Marine Band is the most famous brand of harmonica, here's a real Marine harmonica band:

Not really. None of their biggest hits have harmonica parts that really jump out of the mix, and Whammer Jammer was not a chart hit.

Stevie Wonder. My vote for the best I've heard in a song.
